COFFEE SCALE

Your Very Own SCALE for Your Perfect Coffee Journey

To many coffee lovers, the topic of that perfect cup of coffee is highly diversified.   This is because each individual has a very different, distinct oral and olfactory system, thus the very same cup of coffee will taste only satisfactory to one, while another person may find it superb.

For coffee connoisseurs, many factors come in to determine a successfully brewed coffee flavour. They may measure the perfect flavour by the character traits of the coffee, any off-notes in the coffee character, whether there is a balanced extraction, whether the extraction is bitter or bright, and whether the flavour feels clean and crisp etc.

But before you try to get that cup of improved consistency, tastier brew, flavourful coffee, and to obtain success in every single type of coffee brewing, you would need to get a good grip on extraction, plus a much more precise extraction. A perfect physical extraction of coffee gives rise to flavour-giving soluble solids and gases, along with insoluble particles of coffee fibres, proteins and oils.

To execute this impeccable coffee extraction, one of the most significant and cannot do-without equipment is a digital weighing scale.

It is a well-known fact that digital weighing scale is a much more appropriate method of measuring all areas in culinary matters and arts. And it is notably useful when it comes to measuring mass of coffee solids and liquids for brew ratio and extraction calculations.

A good set of scales is imperative in overcoming the inadequacies and loopholes that one may not see when taking painstaking effort in extracting a cup of espresso. Without a weighing scale, one will definitely face challenges in attempting to do extraction and depending just by volume alone. This will give an illusion of a higher volume of liquid than there actually is, due to the fact that dissolved gases are part and parcel of the nature of any brewing methods.

In order to achieve your ideal brew ratio in mind, BrewRatio recommends acquiring two sets of digital weighing scale. One for measuring small quantities of coffee beans / grounds, and one for weighing larger quantities, such as water or during extraction of liquid from the espresso machine.

With accompaniment of digital weighing scale, it is highly likely that you will get the final cup with the strength that you expect. This strength is expressed by the weight of the coffee compared to the weight of the drink itself. And do bear in mind the normal brew ratio of an espresso usually hovers at around 1.5:1 proportion. This means the beverage itself is 1.5 times the weight of the coffee used to make it. Example: 20g dose of coffee beans is used to make 30g of espresso. And this calculation MUST be executed using the beverage weight, not the weight of the brew water used.

All the above being said, the ratio stated above is a guide to all levels of coffee fans. Whether they are of novice, amateur, professional levels etc, since the final decision on whether the drink tastes good or not lies in a person’s taste buds. Remember that in order to reach the unequalled taste that you want takes time and a lot of trial and error. If the above brew ratio does not work for you, then do make full use of your digital scales to help you adjust to the immaculate measurement of beans and extraction that will suit you eventually.

For now, respect the fusion of practicality and idealism, and enjoy the process of this adventure. We believe that you will get the perfect savour at the right place, and at the right time.
